This project turned out as expected, but getting there was alot differen't than planned, not in a good way. Now it's basically 100% rebuilt (motor, trans, wheels, etc), only slightly modified 1963 FLH. It now has several hundred miles on it and a handful of oil changes (break-in), including a 600 mile trip 2 weeks ago: no real issues to speak of. I have other projects that need love, and that's the only reason for selling this labor of love.

another variation of mid controls (so trendy, but they are comfy). Jockey shift and foot clutch.

THE EXTRAS

I have alot of the parts to basically make it stock, available at extra cost (no front fender or bars though):

    • Correct OEM Speedometer, dash, backing plate (excellent condition)
    • Original rear section of fender (already painted)
    • Reproduction chrome taillight
    • Nice old pogo seat (it is an old leather Corbin version of original), OEM pogo, and new reproduction seat T.
    • Plus a set of OEM saddle bag racks and original 63-69 saddle bags. Both are just in primer for road trip use only, but it's all in pretty darn good condition

The Bads (in the name of full disclosure)

  • I welded the risers to the bars slightly crooked, but that's totally on me. Other than being annoying, they work fine
  • Small chip in the powder coat and paint on the very rear of the right strut/fender during assembly
  • Little bit of weeping from the rocker box gaskets
  • Like all of my builds, alot of the parts are original and have a little character, and I like to keep them that way. Examples would be imperfections in the chrome on the motor, shock covers, and air cleaner; and some pitting that was in the metal on the original oil tank and Kelsey-Hayes rims (which were blasted to bare metal to remove all rust and then powder coated)

The Build

12/12/10 Wheels striped. Only a few odds and ends left. Breather replaced and filter mounted. Fuel lines, filter, fittings done. Exhaust sealed and new bracket for front pipe . Oil tank decal still to be replaced by hand striping.

12/2/10 Time for finishing touches. I didn't like the way the pulleys lined up and for the sake of originality, I wasn't putting a later mainshaft in the trans. So, I thought I'd take .169 off back of the front BDL pulley, but turns out there's not much meat to their inserts and it fell right out (not impressed). Of course it's a kind of odd 45 tooth front pulley and I could find no replacement pulley w/ a removable insert from BDL or Primo, so I wasn't left with many choices. But I happened to have a splined insert laying around for a BDL......... Now things line up.

11/27/10 Finally did the first start up and a few break-in miles. By no means done, but rewarding none the less.

11/21/10 Slower than expected, but getting there. Alot yet to come.

11/7/10 Motor basically done. Long time in the making.

10/31/10 Wiring done. Motor coming together.

10/28/10 Lower end, cylinders, etc. back from the machinist. Best news in this whole deal. New everything almost. Finally time to finish. Need to finish assembly and get the pinstriping done.....

7/7/10 Cases back from the welder, and blasted. Front end is finally done after chrome removal, shaving, new seals, and tons of sanding and polshing (legs and brake backing plate).

5/23 Hubs completely rebuilt, wheels balanced, emblems painted. Linkert done.

Parts back from chrome/dechrome. Some work to do on the legs.

4/24/10 Trans done and in bike. Standing on it's own now, using spare set of lower legs until the real ones get back from dechroming.

4/20/10 Trans almost ready to go together in this nice original '63 case. Studs in and sealed. Seal in Main Drive Gear. Engine cases off getting repaired.

3/30/10 wheels done plus a few odds and ends.

3/28/10 Splitting time with the other pan: Wheels are almost done. And most of the chassis is done. Still have a motor and trans to do later this year.

3/14/10 Did the heads today. Basically cleaned everything, lapped the valves, and reassembled since everything was still in spec. Got the flywheels apart. Not as lucky on the bottom end as I was on the top, but it's probably never been rebuilt: I'll be replacing bushings and bearings in the lower end.

2/1/10 Paint work done. Still need a Pinstriper for a few misc parts though (contact me if local and interested). My spin on the factory '63 paint scheme.

OLD NEWS

SURPRISES, SURPRISES

My "nice" gas tanks came in the mail, and they look like shit. Par example, took days of penetrant and alot of torching to get the top cap of the fuel rod off. similar conditions exist under the pretty lace paint job.

It's clear to me that the whole motor was sandblasted to clean it up. Later it was sold as a running motor on Ebay by the other the owner of Gangster Choppers. The silicone sealant everywhere and the electrical tape in the breather were all bonuses.

What? Is the sprocket shaft&bearing not supposed to be packed with sand and garbage?

1/2/10 Finally had time to do a litte more work. Looking at the linkert and all the hardware pretty much tells the tale: The entire engine was sand blasted while assembled. The spring in the linkert has become part of the carb and literally broke in half when removing the drain.

Is that more sand I see?

Like much of the hardware on the motor, the finish on the outsides of the choke disk looked like it had an odd, blasted, finish, so I rotated the choke disc to see. Sure enough, you can the difference b/t the areas that were exposed to sand blasting and not.

I'm sure this is good.

Standing sand in the intake ports. At this point I'm praying someone blasted the cylinders to paint them and never ran it again.

Apparently not. Nice looking pistons and cylinders, aye?

Got to the cam chest and I knew it was everywhere. Some of these are the size boulders: how the fuck did these even get in the motor, and who wouldn't realize this was a problem.

Silicon never really surprises me, but this shit is everywhere too (nice thin smears of it that make nice little bits to go all over the motor. Coming through the oil passages in the tappet blocks, in the breather, everywhere.

And this I can only assume is electrical tape, found in the breather.
